Travel Itinerary

Day 1 -  AKWAABA – WELCOME!

Arrive in Accra, Ghana. Transfer from the airport to your hotel. Overnight at a hotel in Accra.

Day 2 -  SHAI HILLS

Make a scenic drive to The Shai Hills Game Reserve which combines nature conservation, rich cultural interest and archaeological sites with splendid scenic beauty. Trek through the savannah plains where you might get to see some of West Africa’s notable game: antelope, bushbucks, kobs, baboons, monkeys and many bird species, including the crested eagle.
Visit the Obonu Tem and Se Yo caves which serve as home to many animals, including a colony of bats. The brave will also have the opportunity to go into the caves, follow the sun and emerge at the peak of the hill! These caves were once home to the Shai people’s ancestors and used by their king until the late 19th century. The area was defensible in times of war thanks to the large stone rocks, overhangs and tunnel-like cave openings. Learn about the various artifacts that have been found on this site.
Overnight at a hotel in Akosombo. Meals Included: Breakfast.

Day 3 -  TAFI ATOME MONKEY SANCTUARY – WLI WATERFALLS

After breakfast, depart to Tafi Atome, a village that has practiced conservation as a culture by keeping their monkeys sacred. Set up to protect the forest and its inhabitants- the mona monkeys, this community-run sanctuary makes for a fun excursion. The monkeys, revered by the villagers, are habituated and readily come to feed off the hands of visitors. Early in the morning and late in the afternoon, they can be seen roaming the village. You will have the rare and exciting experience of witnessing these endangered animals in large numbers as they live in the wild.
After lunch on your own, visit Wli Waterfalls – The highest waterfall in Ghana and the tallest in West Africa which boast of a lower and upper fall. The falls stand amid an exquisite landscape of rolling hills, forests and bubbling streams. You will be in awe of the Falls as you can hear – and feel – the flow of water thundering down. Enjoy a hike through lush greenery of the Agumatsa Forest Reserve where you will cross the same river eleven times to reach the breathtaking falls. A walk through the forest of the Agumatsa wildlife sanctuary offers a chance to see a large colony of bats, butterflies, birds, monkeys and baboons.

Day 5 -  BOABENG FIEMA MONKEY SANCTUARY – MOLE

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and depart to the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary. For generations, the village people of Boabeng and Fiema have believed that the local monkeys are sacred and have prohibited harm to them. The two adjacent communities have created a forest sanctuary to protect the black silky colobus and brown mona monkeys, both of which are an enchanting sight. A visit to the Monkey Sanctuary at Fiema, 22 km north of Nkoranza, makes a great day out. The monkeys have access to all parts of the village and local people plant fruit trees for them. When a monkey dies, it is buried in a coffin and special funeral rites are performed. Afterwards, continue your drive to Mole.

Day 6 -  LARABANGA MOSQUE – AFTERNOON SAFARI

After breakfast, visit the Larabanga Mosque, which is thought to be the oldest mosque in Ghana and West Africa. The Larabanga Mosque made it to the World Monuments Fund’s List of 100 Most Endangered Sites.
Later in the afternoon, take a guided afternoon safari. The afternoon safari begins at 3:00 pm and lasts for an hour, in order not to disturb the animals unduly. An armed guide in a rental jeep escorts tourists on this adventure, which is booked for at the Information Centre. Tourists have the choice of viewing the animals from the roof of the jeep or from the inside, as most of the rental jeeps have rooftop seating.
